Using SIX to Find Your Zone in Golf and Other Mental Precision Sports

Golf has always been a game of precision, but any serious player will tell you: it's just as much a game of being in the right headspace!.

I played on the golf team for two years in high school. I practiced religiously — at the range, on the course, even at Putt-Putt (my coach always said, “Putting is where matches are won and lost”). I drilled my swing mechanics and studied the pros. But time and time again, it wasn’t my muscle memory or technique that held me back — it was my mindset.

When I stepped up to the tee box fully present and relaxed, I could trust my body to do what it had practiced. But the second I started overthinking — adjusting my stance, analyzing my grip, replaying a missed shot — everything started to unravel. One bad swing often triggered a full mental spiral.

Sound familiar?

This struggle isn't unique to golf. Athletes in baseball, tennis, and other high-precision or high-twitch sports experience the same pattern: when the brain gets noisy, performance suffers. You need to be focused, but not tense. Relaxed, but not checked out. Present, but not self-critical. It’s a delicate state—and until recently, it’s been nearly impossible to measure or manage.

Enter SIX: A neuroscience-backed app that helps athletes stay mentally sharp and physically ready.

SIX pairs with smartwatches and wearables to track real-time neurological engagement, revealing what we call Key Moments—the times when your brain and body are in sync and primed for optimal performance. These are the moments when you're truly in the zone—when your swing flows, your timing feels automatic, and your body responds without hesitation.

SIX uses two core metrics: Value, which tells you how emotionally connected and mentally focused you are in the moment, and Safety, which reflects your sense of comfort and confidence. Together, these scores help paint a picture of when your brain is thriving—and what helps get you there.

From a neuroscience perspective, this makes sense. Overthinking during performance activates the brain’s prefrontal cortex—responsible for decision-making and control—but when it dominates, it can override the motor areas responsible for fluid, practiced movement. This disrupts the very muscle memory athletes rely on. In contrast, during peak performance, dopamine and oxytocin levels tend to spike, signaling a state of focused engagement and emotional alignment.

We saw this concept tested years ago—before SIX was even on the horizon. Two professional female golfers used our B2B neuroscience app and our Value and Safety metrics during their practice rounds. The real-time feedback helped them recognize the mental state they needed to be in before stepping into the tee box. Even without today's in-app insights, it improved their rhythm and consistency. It helped them ensure they were in the right mental space to step up to the tee box. That early experience proved what we know now: measuring mindset makes a measurable difference.

Today, SIX helps athletes at every level uncover the mental and physical routines that support peak performance. Whether it’s a deep-breathing sequence, a short walk, or your go-to playlist, SIX identifies what gets your brain into the right mode—and shows you the data to back it up.

If you’ve seen the new show Stick on Apple TV+, it’s what coach Pryce Cahill calls "your thing."

In the series Stick, Coach Pryce tells Santi to find the one thing that resets him after a mistake. For Pryce, it’s the song “Cecilia.” He explains: “You need something that gets you out of your head and back into your game.” With SIX, you can find your own version of Cecilia—then prove its power with real biometric feedback.

Because let’s face it: self-awareness is powerful, but it’s not always accurate. Especially mid-round, mid-match, or mid-inning. With SIX, you can:

  • Spot the moments that elevate your performance

  • Validate your pre-shot or pre-game routines

  • Identify the people, activities, and habits that support (or sabotage) your headspace

  • Avoid spiraling after a mistake by building a reset ritual that’s proven to work for you

It’s like having a mental performance coach in your pocket, personalized to your brain and built for your sport.

Take Drew, a college baseball player. He used SIX during batting practice and noticed that his highest Key Moments weren’t during swings—they came in the five minutes before he stepped up to the plate, when he was doing deep breathing and visualizing his approach. Now, that same ritual is part of his game-day routine—and he has the data to prove it helps.

Whether you're a golf coach helping players stay consistent, a baseball player struggling to bounce back between innings, or a tennis competitor chasing flow—SIX gives you real-time insight into how your mind supports your mechanics.

And if you're a coach, trainer, or athletic director, SIX can be a powerful tool to support athlete development, resilience, and mental performance—without needing to guess who’s thriving and who’s struggling until it shows up on the field.

So the next time you head to the course, don’t just warm up your swing. Warm up your brain.

Find your zone. Track your focus. Tee off with confidence—and stay out of your head when it matters most.
